Police arrest teens with counterfeit cash

TOWN OF BUSTI, NY- Two teen girls are facing serious charges after being caught trying to pass thousands of dollars in fake money.

Lakewood-Busti Police were called to the Chautauqua Mall Wednesday afternoon for a report that the two Chicago residents, ages 16 and 18, were allegedly using phony $100 bills to make purchases at several stores including Rue 21 and Radio Shack.

In each case, the girls bought items with the phony bills and got cash back along with their merchandise. Police say the 16-year-old had $1400 in counterfeit bills on her, the 18-year-old, $3,400. The older teen also allegedly had a small quantity of marijuana in her purse.

The Buffalo office of the Secret Service helped Lakewood-Busti officers to examine the fake bills. The pair are charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and petit larceny. They are being held at the Chautauqua County jail on $15,000 bail each.

Police continue to look into whether others may have been involved in the counterfeit operation.
