Polar bear Anana leaving Buffalo Zoo

BUFFALO, NY-- The Buffalo Zoo announced Thursday that polar bear Anana will be leaving Buffalo soon.

Anana will be part of a breeding recommendation by the  Association of Zoos and Aquarium's Species Survival Plan.

Anana, best known in Buffalo as Luna's mother, has been at the Buffalo Zoo since 2002.

“With a declining population, Anana’s genes are vital to polar bear survival. Anana is one
of a small set of females in North America that has given birth in the past five years
while in human care, and we are thrilled to participate in every effort related to
conservation of this vulnerable species.” said Buffalo Zoo President and CEO Dr. Donna
Fernandes in a released statement.

The location that Anana will be moved to is not being released by the Buffalo Zoo.
