'Squirrel Slam' Draws Ire of Animal Rights Group

HOLLEY, NY - An unusual fundraising event in Orleans County has drawn an unusual protest once again.

A group from the Friends of Animals organization demonstrated across from the Holley Fire Department on Saturday as the 8th Annual "Squirrel Slam" took place.

The Holley fire department says hunters pay an entry fee and then compete by shooting squirrels for cash prizes based on weight, size and other categories. It raises up to $4,000 for firefighting equipment and a nearby park.

Last year's event caused a bit of an uproar after news of the event went viral.

Fire department officials say they'll discuss the squirrel hunt before next year's event is scheduled. The Friends of Animals group wants state legislation banning wildlife hunting contests.
