MEDINA, N.Y. – Sgt. Shaina Schmigel, the 21-year-old paratrooper who died more than a week ago in a training accident in North Carolina, returned to the Village of Medina on Monday afternoon, escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders after her remains arrived at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Thousands of supporters lined Main Street in Medina just before 6 p.m., when a long line of motorcyclists and police vehicles streamed through the village with the national anthem playing in the background. The procession then took Schmigel to the funeral home in Batavia.
"This is certainly what a small town is all about," Mayor Andrew Meier said. "We love our own, and whenever we lose one of them, it really causes a large outpouring of grief and compassion here in the community."
The funeral will be located at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral and Cremation Chapel on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (4120 West Main Street Road, Batavia, New York, 14020). Calling hours run from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Schmigel will be laid to rest at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Corfu. She will be buried with full military honors.
