Big Tree Road Re-Opens After Incident

ORCHARD PARK, NY- What started off as an investigation into a suspicious package, turned into officers looking for a man with a gun.

Orchard Park Police received reports that a man left a suspicious package on the steps of the municipal building. Turns out it was a box full of baseball caps.

Officers had a license plate and traced it to a 43-year-old man who lives on Big Tree Road.

When they got to the house, his wife said he was upset and possibly suffering from mental health issues and left the house with a shot gun.

Police evacuated the wife and daughter and five people from a nearby duplex as a precaution while they searched for the man.

Nearby roads were blocked off and other police agencies came to help.

Two and a half hours later, around 11:30pm, the man returned home and was taken into custody without any problems.

"Because of him dumping a package on a municipal property, it was unknown at the time because he could have been a threat to himself or others that's why he was taken in for an evaluation," says Orchard Park Police Chief Mark Pacholec.

Police don't expect to charge the man.
