Luna the polar bear slips and falls into moat

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Luna, the famous polar bear who has been a major attraction for the Buffalo Zoo, slipped and fell into the moat surrounding her enclosure Saturday afternoon.

Buffalo Zoo President and CEO Donna Fernandes is out of town, but she told us by phone that Luna had been swimming and was walking around the outside of her pool when she slipped and fell about 14 feet.

Luna was startled after the fall, so keepers tranquilized her and carried her up the stairs of the exhibit.

Luna had x-rays done to see how badly she may have been injured. Public relations coordinator Rachel Gottlieb tells 2 On Your Side more information on Luna's condition will be released Tuesday.

In the meantime, Luna is being kept in the polar bear holding area where keepers are monitoring her. They say she appears to be doing well.

Zoo officials say Luna walks along the edge of the moat daily and has done so even when it's covered with ice and had never fallen before.

Gottlieb says the exhibit meets the standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is a temporary home for the polar bears until their new "Arctic Edge" habitat is completed next year.
