Driver seriously injured in Delaware Avenue crash

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A single-car crash along Delaware Avenue shut down part of the busy roadway not far from the area where the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was taking place.

Buffalo Police spokesman Mike DeGeorge says a 21-year-old man was seriously injured when he lost control of his car on Delaware Avenue at the 198 overpass and then jumped the curb. The vehicle hit a bridge abutment and burst into flames.

The accident happened Saturday at about 9 a.m. Passersby could see the charred vehicle sitting just under the 198 overpass.

First responders had to extricate the victim from the car. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center. His condition was listed as serious on Sunday morning.

DeGeorge credited a Good Samaritan with using a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

Officers from Buffalo's Accident Investigation Unit were on the scene and that section of Delaware Avenue remained closed into the afternoon. So far, no cause has been determined for the crash.
