New contract agreement for NFTA's largest union

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Roughly 1,100 of the NFTA's 1,500 workers have agreed on their first contract in nine years.

Wednesday, members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1342 voted and came to an agreement on the Collective Bargaining Agreement. 498 voted "yes" and 297 voted "no."

A union member told 2 On Your Side the contract involves an 11 percent raise, and employees will pay about 10 percent of a new medical plan.

Kimberley Minkel, the NFTA's Executive Director, said in a statement:

“I want to acknowledge the incredible effort that went into the negotiations and thank in particular Jeff Richardson, the new ATU president, who worked very hard for his members. Both sides lobbied for a deal that recognizes the tremendous job our employees do every day and is also fair to the public we serve.”

The board will vote on the agreement at the next board meeting Thursday, July 27.
