Monitoring the roads when winter arrives

2 On Your Side's Erica Brecher covers snow falling in the Southern Tier and how NITTEC works to keep the roads safe.

ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. -- Holiday Valley ski resort is expecting about a foot of snow, which would be a welcomed way to start off the winter season.

2 On Your Side's Erica Brecher and Photojournalist Franco Ardito made their way to Salamanca Saturday. The further they got on this trip, the worse the visibility became as they drove with snow falling quickly.

In Gowanda, a mix of rain and snow fell Saturday and bands of heavy snow made driving difficult at times.

This is the type of weather the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC) looks out for. 2 On Your Side stopped by their headquarters Saturday to learn more.

"When is the rain going to turn to snow? When is rain that is already accumulated on the road possibly going to freeze and where is that going to be? We try to keep an eye on higher elevations particularly in the southern tier because that obviously tends to go first.  Those become trouble spots.," said Jordan Sullivan, NITTEC Traffic Management Operations Technician.
