Men charged with selling counterfeit airbags

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A Cheektowaga man and his business partner are charged with selling hundreds of counterfeit airbags in the US.

U.S. Attorney William Hochul, Jr says 47-year-old Raymond Whelan and 66-year-old David Nichols, an American citizen living in China, sold more than 400 airbags between February 2015 and March 2016.

Prosecutors say they were alerted when an eBay user bought one of the airbags and noticed it wasn't packaged correctly.

Both men are charged with entry of goods by means of false statement, trafficking in counterfeit goods, and conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods, which carry up to 10 years in prison.

Whelan made an initial appearance Tuesday and was released with a court appearance scheduled November 1st.

David Nichols will appear in court at a later time.
