Ontario man sentenced for lottery scam

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY-- An Ontario man who tried to scam an elderly woman was sentenced Thursday.

Daniel Dumesh, 26, of Holland Landing, Ontario, was given a conditional discharge and told to return to Canada.

Investigators say Dumesh tried to scam an elderly Iowa woman by telling her she won a lottery and that she needed to send over $8,000 to claim the prize.

An alert UPS worker worker felt something was not right about a package that was sent to the UPS store on Union Road in Cheektowaga and called police. An investigation revealed that the box contained $8,300 and was sent from an 81-year-old woman who thought she had won the Australian lottery and needed money to process the cash prize.

Two Cheektowaga detectives were waiting for Dumesh when he arrived at the UPS store to pick up the package.
