Local teen DJ mixing music and college

BUFFALO, NY - The EDM or electronic dance music craze is popular and a local teen is making headlines. Joel Almand, 19, of Buffalo, is a DJ and producer and he's gaining fame by the minute.

Almand is the correct spelling, but for his show he spells it Almond, "like the nut," he says.

The Ithaca College student and Nichols grad started producing music over a year ago after his best friend's father passed away.

Being a DJ and producing music is a hobby, but he's attracting attention across the world according to social media.

"I need music and it's just so fun to finally create something that not only you like, but other people like and other people can smile at your stuff and that's just the biggest reward," said Almand, while sitting in his North Buffalo bedroom for an interview.

He has a manager and has already played some big gigs in Philadelphia, Phoenix and New Jersey at the Beach Glow music festival.

Thursday night, Almand performs at the Rapid's Theatre in Niagara Falls. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
