BUFFALO, N.Y. - Local leaders want to make toll booths on Western New York highways a thing of the past.
Congressman Brian Higgins, Williamsville Mayor Brian Kulpa, and Grand Island Town Supervisor Nate McMurray are pushing a plan that would change the tolls on Grand Island, Lackawanna, and Williamsville to what's called "open road tolling."
It essentially makes every lane a high-speed EZ Pass lane, letting people get through faster and cutting down on air pollution from idling cars.
"We're not going to see the toll plaza moved. We get that. What we're trying to do is figure out, how can we eliminate the backup, how can we make this a convenience factor for not only village residents, but mostly for those people that just want to drive past the village," said Kulpa.
This is still just a proposal, so there's no solid plan or timeline for actually changing the toll plazas.
