LANCASTER, N.Y.- One male is dead and four other people were sent to the hospital following a three car crash Wednesday evening on Transit Road, Lancaster Police say.
According to police, two cars and one truck were involved in the crash.
Transit between Losson Road and Como Park Boulevard was shut down as crews dealt with the accident. The road has since reopened.
One of the vehicles was on fire when first responders got there. Police tell us bystanders were rushing to help put out the flames.
Lieutenant Ronald Rozler with Lancaster's Accident Investigation Unit explained what happened as the investigation continues.
"At this time, it looks like we have one vehicle that was traveling southbound on Transit Road. We believe it crossed over into the northbound lane of traffic, struck one vehicle head-on and then the vehicle traveling behind the initial vehicle then was involved in the accident also," said Rozler.
At this point, Lt. Rozler says it is not clear what caused the crash.
"At this time, we believe that he just veered into the oncoming lane of traffic. There was no turn involved. As far as the reason why he did that, we don't know," said Rozler.
Police officers went to the hospital to talk with the people who got hurt to try to find out what they saw. There were several other witnesses being interviewed by police. Investigators expect to release the victim's name and age some time Thursday.
