Hunter shoots house on first day of gun deer season

LEICESTER, NY – A stray bullet broke a first-floor window and lodged in the desk of a home office at 3006 River Road on Saturday, the first day of hunting season. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty said deputies arrested Jay A. Campbell, 32, of Scottsville, for reckless endangerment in the 2nd degree and criminal mischief in the 4th degree. They determined that Campbell shot at a deer with his muzzle loader, hitting the home.

Campbell was taken into custody and released with pending court action. Further charges by the Environmental Conservation Police may be lodged, according to the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Dougherty reminds hunters to be safe, be sure of their targets and background, and use caution.
