AMHERST, NY- A husband and father from Amherst has a mission - protect people out on the roads from drunk drivers. Now he's making it easier for Western New Yorkers to get home safely after one too many drinks.
You might say David Lipinoga is hoping to be drunk-dialed. He's taking reservations for his business that gets people and their cars home safely after a night out. The service launches this weekend, and for David, it's personal.
He was struck by a repeat drunk driver at the corner of Main and Evans in Williamsville in the middle of an afternoon in 2006.
"I was crushed between two vehicles while my wife was four months pregnant. I almost lost my legs. I was in the hospital and had several surgeries and was in a wheelchair," said Lipinoga.
He takes reservations over the phone and he's working on creating an app. Unlike a traditional cab, for a flat rate plus mileage, this service brings your car home with you...and not just from the bar.
"Medical appointments, sporting events, private parties, fundraisers," he said. "It's a lot cheaper than getting a DWI."
The flat rate is $32.99. Each mile is $3. A VIP membership is $59 annually.
David's donating part of the VIP membership proceeds to the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation. Back in 2011, the 18-year-old was struck and killed by Dr. James Corasanti, who was driving drunk.
"I don't want something like this to happen to anyone else in the community. I think it's very important that people make the right driving decisions and we want to be able to give that opportunity to people."
