Federal money coming for Erie County Family Drug Court

Federal Money for Erie County Family Drug Court

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- More communities are turning to treatment over punishment to fight the opioid crisis.

And there will be new resources to do just that in Erie County.

Local leaders announced Monday a $2 million grant from Washington, D.C. for the Erie County Family Treatment Drug Court.

The money will let the court partner with the University at Buffalo and Bestself Behavioral Health to connect families affected by addiction with services they need.

"It's very difficult when you're telling people you have to change this and do this with all the things that brought on the addiction to begin with, and not adequately addressing it," said the Hon. Margaret Szczur  "We've tried and worked and this grant will give us the opportunity to do that even better. "

The resources will include not just treatment for those addicted to drugs, but also education and support for their families.

Those affected by the opioid crisis can call the 24-hour Erie County Addiction Hotline at  716-831-7007.
