CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. -- One person died in a house fire Monday at 93 Peoria Avenue in Cheektowaga, officials say.
The victim has been identified as Barry Fiume, 62, who lived at that address with his 93-year-old father.
"An elderly gentleman was out of the house by the time the fire department got here. His son, who is believed to be in his 60s, is still in the house unfortunately. So it looks like he is going to be deceased," said Asst. Cheektowaga Police Chief James Speyer.
The man's body was recovered later Monday afternoon. Police say there was a history of mental issues with the deceased, although an official cause of the fire is still not known.
Dozens of firefighters from several companies responded after a neighbor called 911 around one o'clock.
It took a couple of hours to put out the flames and get the hot spots under control.
Several firefighters suffered from dehydration and other health issues due to exposure to heat and smoke, Speyer said. They were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga to be treated. They are all be ok.
Extra firefighters were called to the scene of the fire to keep it from spreading to other homes.
