Oil spill shuts down streets in Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - Officials say a broken water pipe in a vacant building leaked a mixture of water, oil and other chemicals into the area.

Parts of the mixture did get into the sewer but the city's public works commissioner says it wasn't anything they couldn't handle.

"It actually goes through our filtration plant and that's part of the process when we have a spill like this," said Commissioner Stepniak. "The sewer authority is notified immediately and they have precautions that they can take at their plant to help deal with that situation."

A spill response team from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was called in to clean up the mess and take samples for testing.
