BUFFALO, NY - Wegmans Food Markets and the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation are giving over $1 million to the Explore & More Children's Museum capital campaign.
The money will be used for the new Explore & More facility opening at Canalside in 2016.
Wegmans donated $550,000 to the project, and will have its name on the From Farm To Fork educational play zone, as well as the Galley cooking area.
The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation also donated $500,000 to support the new museum's rooftop garden.
"This partnership with Wegmans Food Markets fits our mission precisely, and we are so grateful for their financial support as well as their expert input for From Farm to Fork. It is a major investment on behalf of the children and families of Buffalo and Western New York," said Explore & More Executive Director Barbara Leggett.
The museum says the From Farm to Fork exhibit will use Buffalo's rich agricultural history to help children learn where food comes from, and have the chance to harvest on the farm, shop and sell at the produce market, and cook and create in the Galley.
The Rooftop Garden, funded separately by The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation, will look out over the Buffalo Waterfront and offer a variety of outdoor activities for families.
The Explore & More capital campaign launched in December, and the donations from Wegmans are the first major gifts.
The new 40,000 square foot Explore & More museum at Canalside is expected to open in 2016, providing interactive exhibits and programs, and unique experiences for the whole family.
