Buffalo schools want 'Science Week' to last all year

BUFFALO, NY - Many of the highest-paying careers out of college these days are in the science and technology fields. The Buffalo school district is hoping to get kids started on that track early with the new Buffalo Schools "STEM" Experience.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The public-private partnership that kicked off Thursday uses a speaker series and hands-on learning all year 'round to get kids interested in those fields.

Said New York State's Regional Economic Development Co-Chair Howard Zemsky, "Companies that you hear about coming to Buffalo like IBM and Solar City, and investments in computational research and the human genome project, these all depend on a skilled work force and students who graduate with excellent skills in the sciences."

The highlight of the program is the second annual Buffalo Schools Science Week, coming up next March.
