Deputy attacked by driver during traffic stop

COLLINS, NY-A Collins man is facing a slew of charges after allegedly attacking an Erie County Sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop.

It happened shortly before midnight on Taylor Hollow Road in Collins. Todd Edwards, 34, was pulled over for speeding and swerving. The deputy immediately noticed the smell of alcohol and ordered Edwards to get out of his vehicle to perform a field sobriety test, which he failed.

The Sheriff's office said he was uncooperative while being placed under arrest, and it was at that point he allegedly attacked the deputy. The deputy managed to wrestle him to the ground until a Seneca Nation marshal and State trooper arrived to help out.

Edwards was taken to the North Collins Substation where he refused to submit to a breath test.

He's charged with DWI, resisting arrest, along with vehicle and traffic charges.

The deputy was not hurt and remained on duty for the rest of his shift.
