Tax Credit Proposed For Ash Tree Removal

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Lawmakers continue to look for ways to help homeowners dealing with the Emerald Ash Borer destroying trees on their property.

Friday, State Senator Tim Kennedy proposed a tax credit that would provide a 50 percent tax credit per tree removed.
Kennedy says there are more than 24 million ash trees in Erie County alone that are being damaged and destroyed by the ash borer.
"If the removal of these trees were to cost $5,000 dollars for example, a property owner would be eligible for a $2,500 dollar tax credit on his or her New York State taxes, which is a significant amount of financial relief, especially when it's an unplanned expense," said Kennedy.
Kennedy plans to push for the tax credit in the upcoming legislative session in January.
