Coast Guard rescues family of eight near Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. -- The U.S. Coast Guard rescued eight family members who were boating off Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release.

The family was in a 14-foot aluminum vessel traveling to Porter on the Lake Park. A wave suddenly came up over the bow, causing the boat to start taking on water.

A Coast Guard Station Niagara watchstander saw the family waving for help around 4:54 p.m. Station Niagara then launched a 25-foot response boat crew to help. The rescuers were able to save the four children and four adults. All of the children were wearing life jackets, but the adults' life jackets had floated away with the waves.

No injuries were reported to any of the family members or rescuers involved.

The Coast Guard strongly recommends boaters to always wear life jackets while out on the water, and also have signaling devices and obey a boat's suggested maximum occupancy.
