Car goes into Niagara River off Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y.- Grand Island firefighters rescued a man from the Niagara River Monday evening after he drove out about 100 feet into the river.

According to firefighters, the driver, 44-year-old Jeff Silverthorn of Orchard Park, veered off Ransom Road at the intersection of East River Road and traveled into the river.

Firefighters then extracted Silverthorn from his vehicle and brought him back to shore. He was treated for hypothermia, but suffered no injuries.

Silverthorn has been charged with several traffic violations, including DWI.
