Breast cancer group ready to help military families

BUFFALO, NY - She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age 28, but Mercedes Holloway, founder of For Our Daughters, a non-for-profit organization, is all about educating young women about cancer and helping others.

This year, For Our Daughters is holding its annual breast cancer event to raise money for the organization and to raise money help ten military families for the holidays.

The group partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo to find military families in need. Ten are being selected and each will receive $250 in gift cards and all the items needed for Thanksgiving.

"This is just a very exciting opportunity for us, the fact that our families and we've identified ten-military families that will be receiving [assistance] through the benefit that will be taking place on August 17," said Diane Rowe, head of the local Boys and Girls Clubs in Buffalo.

Holloway wanted to make sure her organization reaches out to others in need. Ethel Dapollo told 2 On Your Side, it's a right fit to help the military families in our area.

"This is the fight of our lives recognizing that we are those that struggle with breast cancer are in a fight and the military are in a fight, we want to join hands with them recognizing we are both in the fight of our lives," said Dapollo.

Donations and items for the event are still being accepted.

The 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event will be held August 17, 3:00-7:00, at Classics V Banquet Center, 2425 Niagara Falls Boulevard, Amherst, NY.

Tickets are $20. For more information, call (716) 930-9345.
