BUFFALO, NY-- The Buffalo Zoo announced Tuesday the arrival of a new polar bear.
Sakari, a male polar bear, arrived in Buffalo from the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin. He will eventually be introduced to Luna, a female polar bear as part of a Species Survival Plan.
Luna's mother, Anana, recently left Buffalo, and is now at the Cincinnati Zoo under the same plan. It is expected that she will be introduced to Cincinnati's "Little One" polar bear to breed.
“The Buffalo Zoo is proud to be a part of such a major undertaking” said Buffalo Zoo President and CEO, Dr. Donna Fernandes in a released statement. “It is incredibly important that we continue to work together to help save this vulnerable species. By moving these bears to their new homes, it gives each Zoo a chance to work towards the conservation of the species.”
There's no word yet on when Sakari will be introduced to the public.
