BPS Board holds reorganization meeting

Board's First Meeting Since Paladino Hearings

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Board of Education's reorganization meeting Wednesday featured some rather bizarre moments in light of a recent hearing involving one of its members.

Last week, a hearing was held in Albany before State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia to determine if Carl Paladino should remain on the school board.

Paladino, back from Albany, attended the meeting Wednesday and nominated several board members to be president, including Paulette Woods, Jennifer Mecozzi and Hope Jay.

Paladino said later he had not asked any of those school board members if they would like to be nominated, and all declined the nomination.

When asked if he had thought it would make more sense to ask the school board members before nominating them, Paladino responded: "It might be a little more appropriate, yeah, but I chose not to do that."

Paladino himself was nominated by Patricia Pierce, and he declined the nomination.

In the end, it was determined by a vote Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold would remain the board's president.

Sharon Belton-Cottman will remain the Vice President of Exec. Affairs and Dr. Harris-Tigg will serve as VP of student achievement.
