BPD starting officer body camera program

BPD To Start Body Camera Pilot Program Soon

BUFFALO, N.Y.-- Some Buffalo Police Department officers will soon be out and about wearing body cameras as part of their uniform.

Mayor Byron Brown announced Tuesday that the city has started the bidding process for a body camera program. The department will start with a test of 20 body cameras over three months, and if the pilot program goes well, they could expand that to as many as 550.

As for who will be wearing these cameras to start, Mayor Byron Brown said, "It will be some of those units that most come into contact with members of the community, so that we can really test the body cameras in some real-time situations. We can test the effectiveness, we can test the cost."

Brown says the pilot program will start in the near future.
