Pedestrian hit in four-vehicle crash dies

AMHERST, NY – Amherst police officers say a pedestrian who was hit by a car as she crossed Millersport Highway at Flint Road Friday afternoon died Saturday morning.

Yu Hua Qiu, 18, of Brooklyn, suffered a head injury and was taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital by ambulance and then to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight. She expired at about 8 a.m. Saturday

The accident occurred at a busy intersection near the main entrance to the University at Buffalo North Campus Friday just before 4 p.m.

A Ford pick-up truck hauling a small trailer of topsoil south on Millersport hit a 2003 Chrysler in the middle of the intersection. The impact of the pick-up, driven by Daniel E. Kepple, 48, of Buffalo, caused the Chrysler to spin around and hit the pedestrian, who was crossing Millersport from west to east. After hitting the Chrysler, the pick-up truck hit two other vehicles in the northbound lane waiting to turn left to go west on Flint.

The first car was driven by Rebecca Jo Reyes, 25, of Michigan. She and her passenger, Sandra Mohn, 56, were taken to Millard Suburban. Their condition was not available. The second vehicle was operated by Dana M. Cave, 27, of Tonawanda. She was not injured.

Kepple, the pick-up truck driver, was not hurt in the accident. Aujonee N. Smith, 20, of Amherst, the driver of the Chrysler, was treated and released from Millard Suburban.

Traffic was diverted from the area for five-and-one-half hours as investigators worked the scene and the vehicles were cleared away. On Saturday, police told us that the investigation was continuing and that charges were pending. No more details were available.

They are asking for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the Amherst Police Department at 689-1311.
