Amherst Crash Follows Heart Attack

AMHERST, NY – On Friday, we reported that a 52-year-old Amherst man was killed when his pick-up truck crashed into a tree at 304 Woodcrest just after 4 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon, Amherst Police Captain Patrick McKenna released a statement saying the Erie County Medical Examiner has determined that the victim, Robert J, Lechiara, died of a heart problem and not from injuries sustained in the crash.

Witnesses saw the truck weaving from side to side before running straight into the tree, McKenna said.

Lechiara was not wearing a seat belt. McKenna said he was taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 5 p.m.
