Amherst Considering Tougher Tobacco Laws

AMHERST, NY- An Amherst councilman plans to propose a law that would enact stricter tobacco laws for the town.

Councilman Steven Sanders is bringing forward a resolution which would not allow the sale of tobacco to people under the age of 21.

The proposal would also stop sales of tobacco within 1500 feet of a school, the sale of flavored tobacco products and ban e-Cigarettes at any place where cigarettes are prohibited.

"All five of the items are targeted towards youth. I'm not here to stop people from smoking who already smoke. My goal is to stop the next generation of smokers from coming forward," Councilman Sanders said.

If the resolution passes Monday the town attorney would then write a local law, which would then be brought back to the town board in a public hearing.
