Amherst Child's Death Ruled Homicide

AMHERST, NY-- The death of a three-year-old Amherst girl has been ruled a homicide.

The Erie County Medical Examiner's office ruled Mayouna Smith's death was caused by blunt force trauma.

Police say the child's mother called 911 Saturday morning reporting that her daughter was unresponsive and not breathing.

CPR was performed when she was found; the toddler was taken to ECMC where she was pronounced dead.

The child was found at an apartment on Allenhurst Road, which is a block east of Niagara Falls Boulevard in the southwest part of town.

Amherst police say they had no prior contacts with the couple.

The mother spoke with police, but when they questioned the boyfriend he put a stop to his interview by saying he wanted a lawyer.

CPS has been notified of a 1-year-old boy that was in the adults' care. He was unharmed and is currently staying with relatives.

Police are asking for anyone with information to contact them at: 716-689-1360.
