Amherst Police locate injured snapping turtle

AMHERST, N.Y. -- An Amherst Animal Control Officer responded to a report of an injured, 20 pound snapping turtle Friday, according to a news release from Amherst Police.

A good Samaritan reported the turtle trying to get across a roadway near Glen Park in Williamsville, Amherst Police say.  Amherst Animal Control Officer Cyndi Griffin then found the turtle and it was taken to the SPCA Serving Erie County, where it is currently recovering from a leg injury.

Amherst Police say they do not believe the injury is related to any animal cruelty.  Officer Griffin also reminds residents to be aware that snapping turtles are often very temperamental, quick to bite people, and "one this size could take a finger off!"
