Allegany man charged with arson

ALLEGANY COUNTY, N.Y. -- A man from Allegany County is accused of trying to burn down a house after buying vehicles from the owner.

Gary Marvel was arrested and charged with third-degree arson and a felony, after a fire on Wednesday at a home in the Town of Almond on Karr-Valley Road.

State Police say the 74-year-old bought a farm tractor and a van from a homeowner in the Town of Almond, and then tried to return them.

When the homeowner refused to refund the money, troopers say Marvel allegedly lit the house on fire. They say he was seen with items to start the fire, according to interviews with the homeowner and neighbors.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt.

Marvel was arraigned at the Town of Friendship Court and was then sent to the Allegany County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
