5K raises money for memorial scholarship

5k Benefit Run for Lou Reuter Scholarship Program

TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- A beloved Kenmore East High School teacher's dream was kept alive with a 5K Sunday.

Nearly 200 runners participated in the Lou Reuter Memorial Scholarship Run.

The event aims to raise a $1,000 scholarship for a deserving senior student with an emphasis on community service, academic achievement and athletics.

"That was Lou's special plan," said Kenmore East Track Coach Jeff Brunger. "He wanted that student to be recognized who might otherwise go unnoticed or go under the radar, who did all kinds of things but wasn't great at anything. But good all around in everything. And Lou wanted to recognize that student."

Lou Reuter passed away in 2009. He was known as a legendary educator and coach. The event was held for the seventh year Sunday.
