BUFFALO, N.Y.-- It was a beautiful morning for the 20th annual Parkside Community Association's Garden and Architecture Tour on Sunday.
The self-guided tour begins at the heart of Parkside, near the Darwin Martin House Complex. The tour shows off all the beautiful homes and gardens in the Parkside community. The historic neighborhood was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted back in 1870.
The annual walk is something that the area takes great joy in. Amber Small, Executive Director with the Parkside Community Association says, "We have a great pride of place. We've got beautiful, old, historic home-stock, wonderfully maintained gardens, we've got historic homes like the Darwin Martin House here in the neighborhood."
Over 50 gardeners volunteered their time, efforts and gardens for the roughly 300 attendees to admire. Those who attend the walk can also learn a bit about how to maintain or start their own gardens. "The garden tour sort of inspired us," Small said. "We saw what our neighbors were doing, you know, how much you could impact your landscape by just a little bit of effort. We have some people who do meticulously well-maintained gardens, and then there are other, more natural gardens here in the neighborhood. There's a wide variety, which I think people really appreciate when they come and attend the tour."
Proceeds from the tour go to support the Parkside Community Association, which works to provide summer camps for kids, crime prevention, housing advocacy, traffic safety and more.
