Crash leaves teen in critical condition

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- An 18-year-old is in critical condition after an accident at the intersection of North Ave. and Ruie Road in North Tonawanda Wednesday afternoon, detectives say.

The 18-year-old, whose name has not been released, stopped at a stop sign at the intersection, police say.

However, after he stopped, he accelerated and then left the roadway and hit a tree head-on around 400 feet away, officials say.

No one else was injured and police say the 18-year-old was wearing a seatbelt. They also said they don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident, but they are continuing the investigate.
