Overdose leading cause of death under age 50

There are new numbers that show how severe the heroin and opioid overdose crisis has gotten across the country.

Overdose is now the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50, topping car crashes and gun violence.

Last year, accidental overdoses were responsible for at least 62,000 deaths. That's more than HIV/AIDS at the height of the epidemic in the mid '90s. And more Americans died of drug overdose in 2016 than in the entire Vietnam War.

The Erie County addiction hotline number, run through Crisis Services, is 716-831-7007.
