For Addicts, Path To Treatment Could Be At Police Headquarters

13 Police Depts Offer Path To Drug Treatment

ORCHARD PARK - WNY is now home to the largest concentration of police agencies participating in the REAP program. REAP stands for Rapid Evaluation and Appropriate Placement. The goal of the program is to move addicts into treatment programs.

Withe the epidemic of opiate and heroin addiction in western New York, the need to move more drug users into treatment is clear.

“It’s not like it’s just us against them any more,” says town of Hamburg Police Chief Greg Wickett.

Under the program, if someone enters the headquarters of a participating police department and surrenders any drugs on their person, they will not be arrested. Instead a local network of treatment providers and volunteers will go to work to find a way to get that person into treatment. That same say, if possible.

Here's a list of police departments participating in the REAP program: Amherst Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Depew, East Aurora, Erie County Sheriff Department, Evans, Tow of Hamburg, Lancaster, Niagara Falls, NFTA, Orchard Park and town of Tonawanda.
