GILBERT, S.C. (AP) - Rick Santorum and Ron Paul are insisting they're still in the mix, but the polls indicate it's Newt Gingrich who's been closing in on Mitt Romney as tomorrow's South Carolina primary approaches.

And Romney is singling out Gingrich as his chief competitor in the state. He's calling on Gingrich to release a more detailed accounting of his the investigation into his ethical problems as House speaker.

It follows calls from Gingrich for Romney to quickly release his tax records.

The polls indicate Romney has slid in the past week as he's faced questions about his wealth and that Gingrich has risen as he's worked to consolidate conservative support behind his candidacy.

Four years ago, Romney abandoned South Carolina when it was clear he would lose big during his first run for the presidency.
