Lewiston-Porter Teacher to Meet President

Lewiston, NY - A teacher from the Lewiston-Porter school district will meet with the most powerful man on Earth Thursday.

Ashli Skura-Dreher is a special education teacher in the Lewiston-Porter School District and is currently in Washington D.C. as the New York State Teacher of the Year. She says she is the first ever special education teacher to carry that title.

Skura-Dreher has already met with second lady Dr. Jill Biden and her daughter will be with her as she meets President Obama in the Oval Office on Thursday. She expects they will have a moment or so to speak with the President after posing for pictures. The National Teacher of the Year will then be selected at 2 p.m. in a ceremony that will be televised by CNN. There are 53 teachers representing each of the states and US territories.

Skura Dreher says she is also visiting with a Deputy Secretary of Education. in DC. She will speak with him about the new core curriculum and its testing assessment methods and how that impacts the special needs students in her classes.

This is Skura-Dreher's first trip to Washington and she says she is thrilled to represent hard working teachers across New York.
