Ken-Ton Board of Education Votes to Close Three Schools

TONAWANDA, N.Y.- The Ken-Ton school board voted Tuesday night to close two elementary schools and one middle school, based on the findings of a consolidation report.

Under the chosen course of action, known as "Scenario I", the Alexander Hamilton and Theodore Roosevelt elementary schools will close along with Kenmore middle school, which will be used for office space and education programs.

Scenario I also reshuffles the grade levels for each program. High schools now run grades 8-12, middle schools are grades 5-7 and elementary schools are PreK-4.

The Philip Sheridan building and Jefferson school will also be sold.

According to the report, scenario I decreases the chances of additional schools closings over the next 5-10 years.

The board says the plan will be implemented for the 2016-2017 school year and will save about $5 million in the first year.
