It has been all of 22 years since I've done any improvisational performing (not counting reporting the news).
The last time I was on an improv stage was doing some very forgettable parkbench scene at SUNY Brockport. I've always toyed with the idea of trying it again, but it wasn't until recently that the opportunity jumped in my face!
I recieved an invite to join the ComedySportz troupe on stage for their 15th Anniversary Show. I attended a practice to get my feet wet, and Saturday night it was showtime!
What an absolute blast! We had a packed house at North Tonawanda's fantastic landmark theatre, The Riviera. The crowd was ready, was I?
The ComdeySportz show is half competition and half performance. Think a local version of "Who's Line Is It Anyway" (although ComedySportz actually pre-dates the show).
The show is divided into different events and improv games. The first was called "Da Do Run-Run". Each player has to sing a verse of the song, rhyming a name suggested by the audience. So if the crowd says "Bob", it would be "I met him on a Monday and his name was Bob...da do run-run-run...da do run-run... Bob's favorite movie was The Blob... da do run-run-run" etc, etc, etc.
At one point I couldn't come up with a rhyme, so I just broke into a rousing rendition of 'Sweet Caroline".
It was a great way to have some fun, and stretch my acting and comedic skills (or lack of).
The best part, all that fun benefits a great cause. The proceeds will go to Gilda's Club.
