Woman arrested for leaving infant in hot car

SPRINGVILLE, NY- A Town of Persia woman was arrested Sunday after leaving her one-year-old child inside her car while shopping, according to Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard.

Jessica Hojnacki, 32, told sheriff's deputies she was running some errands and had forgotten the child was in the car.

The sheriff's office says an employee at the Springville Walmart noticed a child was inside a car in the parking lot. The employee then notified the store manager, who made an announcement over the store's PA system.

A passerby also saw the infant in the car, broke out a window and removed the child from the vehicle.

The sheriff's office says the infant was taken inside the store and evaluated by paramedics. The paramedics found that the child was inside the car for about 30 minutes and the temperature outside at the time was approximately 75 degrees.

Hojnacki has been charged with child endangerment. Because she lives in Persia, any further follow-up will be done by the Cattaraugus County Child Protective Services.
