Teen's death ruled homicide due to medical neglect

WARSAW, NY-- A Wyoming County couple is facing charges in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl.

Jeremy P. Ikeler, 35, and Astrid Ikeler, 38, of Castile were indicted by a Wyoming County Grand Jury, and have been charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of Marissa Ikeler.

The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office says they responded to a a call January 26 for a 15-year-old female who had suffered a seizure and was not breathing. The teen was taken to Wyoming County Community Hospital before being transferred to Women and Children's Hospital. She died the next day.

Following an autopsy by the Erie County Medical Examiner's office, Marissa Ikeler's death was ruled a homicide due to medical neglect. Investigators say the teen was not receiving proper medical care and medication for an existing condition.

Both Ikelers were arraigned in Wyoming County Court and are currently in the Wyoming County Jail on $5,000 bail. Their next court date is October 23.

Neither the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office or the Wyoming County District Office would confirm the relationship of the couple to the girl.

However, Kristy Arisewood, a business owner who knows the family, tells 2 On Your Side the 15-year-old girl is the daughter of the couple. The couple's two other children are now staying with their grandmother. Arisewood believes the family has been facing financial troubles.

Arisewood said, "Obliviously, something was going on. Maybe it was financial issues or maybe it was insurance issues, but don't think this is something that they intentionally did to her at all."
