String of Rapes and Assaults Alarming to West Side Residents

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Police say three different women were raped in separate incidents in neighborhoods on the city's West Side over just the past eight days.

Police also say a fourth woman was attacked on the West Side when she was hit on the head with a beer bottle.

The incidents happened in Allentown, the Elmwood Village, the Lower West Side, and the Delaware District.

The first incident occurred June 29, when a 33-year-old woman was raped and robbed while walking on Niagara Street near the Shoreline apartments. She told police her cellphone and purse were taken during the attack.

The second incident occurred July 2, when a woman riding her bike home from work was storing her bike in a shed when a man pushed her into the shed and choked her and raped her. Police say the incident happened on the 400 block of Delaware Avenue.

Around 3 a.m. on July 5, a woman was outside a restaurant at the corner of Elmwood and Allen, when she told police a man hit her and then dragged her into an alleyway. He then raped her and took off.

Later that day, police arrested a suspect, 16-year-old Dionte Cooper. While he is a juvenile, 2 On Your Side is identifying him because he's charged as an adult.

The most recent incident happened late Sunday night, when a 30-year-old woman was put into a "bear hug" by a suspect, who then punched her in the face and smashed a beer bottle on her head. Police say the incident occurred on Ashland Avenue near Bryant Street.

Buffalo Police say they have increased patrols in those areas and are making progress in their investigation. They are also reminding people to be aware of their surroundings.

Police do not believe the Niagara Street and Ashland attacks are related to the other two. More arrests and charges could be coming.
