Sheriff's warn of Publisher's Clearing House scam

ALBION, NY--  An Orleans County resident was suspicious when they got a letter in the mail saying they'd won over half a million dollars from Publishers Clearing House.

Included with the letter was a check for nearly $8,000 which the letter claimed was part of the winnings.

Investigators contacted Suntrust Bank and found out the check was counterfeit and part of a scam going on across the country.

Publishers Clearing House said it only awards prizes in person, never through the mail. If you or someone you know has gotten a similar letter, or are suspicious of any other type of mail you receive, you're asked to contact authorities.
