Scammers pose as Erie Co. Sheriff's Office

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Erie County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about scammers posing as members of their office.

According to Sheriff Timothy Howard, his office has received several calls from residents saying that an Erie County Sheriff's Office Sergeant by the name of Robert Stzeczario (badge # 40591) has called them, threatening to arrest them unless they pay a $2,500 fine for failing to appear at jury duty.

The scammer will then ask residents to pay the fine by way of pre-paid cards or money orders

The Sheriff says his office will never contact resident to serve a warrant or to collect fines through a third party pre-paid card service.

Detectives are currently investigating the calls, but until it's resolved, the Sheriff's Office is recommending that resident who receive these types of calls to just hang up the phone.
