Driver charged after ending up in pond

NORTH COLLINS, NY-- An Erie County woman is facing charges after she allegedly drove her vehicle into a pond.

Deputies were called to Sisson Highway and Shirley Road in North Collins early Friday morning for a report of a vehicle in the pond.   When deputies arrived, they say they found a minivan partially submerged in the pond with its lights still on and the driver sitting there smoking a cigarette while rescuers pulled her to safety.

Sonya Gelster, 37, of Boston, NY, is facing several charges, including felony DWI.  Deputies say she failed multiple sobriety tests and refused to submit to a breath test.

Gelster is currently in the Erie County Holding Center awaiting arraignment.
